During cold and flu season, it's important to have a bottle of hand sanitizer available for those time when you don't have access to wash your hands. Rather than buy hand sanitizer, it's almost just as easy to make your own DIY Hand Sanitizer with just a few ingredients like aloe vera, rubbing alcohol, and distilled water. Plus, added essential oils help make the hand sanitizer smell fresh.
This hand sanitizer formula has citronella essential oil included, which also help it double as a DIY bug spray.
You can print out these cute pink DIY Hand Sanitizer labels to put on your bottles so you know what's in the bottle.
Just whisk together all ingredients, then add the essential oils and whisk some more.
Use a funnel to pour the hand sanitizer into the bottles and add a label.

I have heard that water creates bacteria inside of homemade projects like this.
What is the water being used for to thin out mixture? Can it be substituted?

Using the distilled water helps reduce any bacteria. I would imagine you could try eliminating the water or increasing the rubbing alcohol if you're concerned. Just make sure the consistency is thin enough to still use the spray bottle.
