Doing something just because someone tells you to doesn't work unless it's something you want. For example, just because someone tells you that you need a budget, doesn't mean creating a budget will work. You need a reason for starting a budget. In other words, you need a why for your budget. Let's take a closer look at why you need a “why” for your budget.
You Need to Know Why It Matters
Anytime you begin to struggle with your budget, you need to be able to remind yourself why you're doing this. For example, you might have created a budget so that you could get out of debt. When you start to have trouble, you can remind yourself that you're doing this to pay off debt and have more money to spend for the things you want and need.
You Need to Know Why You're Cutting Back
Why are you forcing yourself to cut back on certain expenses? Is your stockpile overflowing? Do you feel that your money isn't being well spent? You need to be able to remind yourself why cutting back is so important for you and your family.
You Need a Reminder of Your Goal
Sometimes you create a budget because you have a goal in mind. It might be a vacation or a remodel. Whatever it is, you need to know why you're sticking to your guns and using a budget each month. Create a goal board with pictures of what you want as a reminder.
You Need to Know Why Because Otherwise You Won't Do It
You can't simply create a budget because everyone has told you to. You need to have a reason. Otherwise, you're not going to stick to your budget. It's not enough to do it just because. You need a reason. For many people it's to pay off debt, but it could also be to save for a down payment on a house or to go on vacation. When you truly have a reason, it's so much easier to stick to your budget.
Everyone should have a budget, but you must have a reason. If you don't have a reason for creating a budget, you'll never stick to it. Why stick to something that's hard to do when you don't have a reason? Take the time to discover why you want to create a budget.
