The average household spends around $1,000 on Christmas gifts. Think about that for a minute. Chances are your first used car didn’t cost that much. Wouldn’t it be nice to spend less? That doesn’t mean you need to give tacky gifts. There are ways to save money on Christmas gifts and still give awesome gifts. Let’s take a closer look.
Use Coupon Codes Online
I never place an order online (except maybe to Amazon?) without first looking for any coupon codes that I can use at the store for either a discount off my total or free shipping, etc. You can search my online coupon code database for up to date coupon codes that you can use on your purchase.
Hit the Sales Throughout November
Look, the days of true Black Friday deals are gone. Stores now have sales all throughout November (and often at Black Friday prices). You’ll find great deals both online and off (although I prefer to shop online rather than visit the stores during the rush of the holidays).
Trade in Points
If you’re a member of Swagbucks, MyPoints or Fetch Rewards (use referral code U9787 for 2,000 bonus points), the holiday season is a great time to trade in your points. You can get gift cards and then purchase gifts for your friends and family. If you put in the effort, you can earn a lot of points throughout the year. This is especially true if you shop online. Remember to click through your reward site of choice to earn whenever shopping online.
Put Together Gift Baskets
You can spend $1 here and $3 there buying items to go in a themed gift basket and have a gift basket that costs $25 but looks like a million bucks. Spruce it up with a cute basket from the Dollar Tree and a cellophane bag. You’ll be amazed at how impressive these gifts can look.
Purchase Discounted Gift Cards
During the holiday season, big box stores like Sam’s Club have discounted gift cards. You can usually purchase a pack of gift cards that total $100 for only $80. A 20% discount on Christmas gifts can save you some serious money. If you’re getting packs of 5 gift cards, that’s like one gift card being free. How awesome is that?
Use those discounted gift cards either to purchase your gifts (since you're already getting a discount on your payment) or give the discounted gift cards as the gift.
If you don't have a Sam's Club membership, you can also shop for discounted gift cards at sites like Gift Card Granny.
Shop the Clearance Section
Clearance is a treasure trove of awesome items! You never know what you’ll find, and you can score some major savings. And, best of all, some items are even cheaper than what the clearance tag says. For example, Walmart has a lot of what people refer to as “hidden clearance”. This is when items ring up for less than what they’re marked for. Shop clearance throughout the year to save big on Christmas gifts.
Last year, I managed to find an amazing deal on an iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner at Walmart. I paid just over $100 for it, and I think it's my favorite deal I've ever found!
You don’t have to overspend on Christmas gifts. There are so many great ways to save money. Whether you get discounted gift cards or trade in reward points, you can save money on Christmas gifts.
