Each Friday, I'll attempt to highlight some way that we try to live frugally. One of the things that is top of mind today is camping, since we're going camping next week.
Camping offers us an inexpensive way to get away and vacation together as a family. You don't need anything fancy to go camping...just a tent and an air mattress (if you don't like sleeping straight on the ground). We love the fact that we can get away for a couple of week-long trips during the summer and some weekends away for a lot less than the price of a hotel stay. You also do all/most of the cooking at your campsite, so you don't have to pay for meals out. With the price of gas this summer, we are trying to stay closer to home, but there are plenty of campgrounds to choose from nearby.
We have so much fun when we're camping, and there are many benefits. You are outdoors and active, getting exercise from lots of hikes and walks around the campground. You have lots of time to spend together as a family without any TV to interrupt (although it's really a bummer that I scheduled this during the second week of the Olympics!). My kids have the best time when we're camping...they can run around as much as they want...they can swim as much as they want (OK...as much as we're willing to go in with them), they can ride bikes, they can be loud, they can eat smores. Can you tell we love camping!
