When I'm at home and I need to call someone, I simply head to my address book or computer and look up a number. But, what if I'm away from home and don't have the number handy?
Last summer, we were camping, and I remembered that I forgot to sign my son up for swim lessons (and if I waited until we came home the class would be full). I didn't have an internet connection or the brochure to look up the number, so I had to call directory assistance, which put a whopping $1.49 charge on my bill.
However, there is an alternative to 411 that could have saved me a lot of money. Here are three of the services and what they offer:
- (800) FREE 411
- (800) GOOG 411
- (800) 555 TELL
How do these sites offer directory assistance for free? Many of them require you to listen to ads before they give you the number, and they don't usually connect you, so you'll need to have a pen and paper handy.

I love Google 411! They will also send you the info in a text message which is great because you can access it whenever you want.
You can also text them with the general search info too if you don't even feel like calling!
