If you were to open your closet, would you be happy with what you found? Whether you've landed a new job or are simply tired of never having anything nice to wear, you may be in need of a new work wardrobe. The good news is you don't have to break the bank. Here are just a few tips to create a work wardrobe on a budget.
1. Set a Budget
First things first. You need to set a budget so that you don't spend more than you can really afford. Look at your savings and see what you can afford. Once you have a budget in mind, sit down and think about the outfits you want to create. This will help you assign an amount to each type of piece you need.
2. Look for Basic Pieces in Discount Department Stores
A great tip is to buy your most basic pieces in discount department stores, such as Walmart. For example, if you're layering knit tops under a jacket, you can purchase those for $10 or less. Look at the list you created when you made your budget and see which items you can buy at discount department stores.
3. Only Buy Pieces That Can Be Worn in at Least Three Outfits
One of the biggest mistakes people make is to buy a piece they absolutely love that only goes with one outfit. This is such a waste of money. You want each piece you buy to be versatile. This will allow you to create a number of great outfits with just a few pieces.
4. Embrace Neutrals
You can help ensure that pieces can be worn in different outfits by buying neutrals for your pants, skirts, and jackets. You can always play around with colors for your basic pieces. For example, a black power suit can be worn with a ruby red blouse or a hot pink top, but you'll have two different looks.
5. Buy Quality Pieces
Last, but not least, because you'll be able to create several outfits with just a few pieces, you want to make sure the pants, suits, jackets, and skirts you buy are quality pieces. This will ensure that your wardrobe stays looking good for months and months. Shop the sales at your favorite department stores for the best prices.
You don't have to spend a ton to get a great wardrobe. All it takes it making smart choices. Whether that's buying pieces that can be mixed and matched or buying your basics at a discount department store, these tips will help you stay on budget.

I lost a significant amount of weight last year (5 dress sizes) and had to completely replace my wardrobe (a great problem to have had, although a major budget killer). I did not have much money to work with, but I was able to find a lot of really good quality used items at the local Goodwill, Volunteers of America, Salvation Army, re-sale consignment shops, etc. Everything from suits and dresses to casual clothes and coats. It took a little patience, but in a fairly short amount of time I was able to find better quality and lower cost items this way. If you plan it right, you can even catch their clearance days or when certain color tags are 50-75% off or more. Well worth the hunt!

First, congrats on the weight loss! That's awesome! I love your tips to shop the resale shops too. You can definitely find some great pieces if you're patient.
