Watching movies is a great way to beat the summer heat or keep warm in the winter. Plus, many families enjoy watching movies together. It’s a great pastime. The only problem is that movies can get expensive, especially if you’re renting movies through your satellite or cable company. Thankfully, you can save money on movies.
Use Your Amazon Prime Membership
Do you have a Prime membership? Then you have access to hundreds of free-to-stream movies. There’s something for literally everyone and there’s even big-name movies. These aren’t your cheapo freebie movies that are knock-offs of big hits or older than dirt. It’s one of the many perks of being a Prime member.
Subscribe to a Streaming Service
If you subscribe to Netflix or Hulu, they offer great movies to watch. Best of all, both are extremely affordable costing around $10 or less per month for each service.
We have a Roku Streaming Stick, and I love how we can search for a specific movie or TV show, and the Roku will tell us if it's available on Netflix, Hulu, or the Roku Channel (or where you can rent it from a site like Vudu).
Rent Movies from Redbox
Redbox isn’t quite as popular as it used to be, but you can still rent DVDs for only $1.75 each. There is also Redbox on Demand but the prices can be just as high as renting movies from your TV provider.
Hit the Pawn Shop or Thrift Stores
One of the biggest problems with renting movies from Redbox is that you can now find DVDs in pawn shops and thrift stores for less than renting a movie at Redbox. Goodwill, for example, sells DVDs for $1.50. You can often find pawn shops that have 10 for $10 deals or something similar. Why rent when you can buy? This is a great way to purchase some of your family’s favorites.
Check the Dollar Tree
Yeah, you read that right. The Dollar Tree sells DVDs and blu-rays. And, yes, they’re $1 each. These are movies that are around 10 years old or so but they’re $1 each! You can get a movie, snacks, and drinks and spend less than $10.
Look for Free and Legal Apps
Last, but not least, if you have Roku or something similar, you can find a number of free and legal to use apps that feature older movies. There are no fees or rental charges. Roku, for example, has The Roku Channel which features free movies that they switch up on a regular basis.
If your family loves movies, but you’re on a budget, there are ways to watch movies on the cheap. Whether you subscribe to Netflix or download an app, you can save money on movies.

I am on Redbox' mailing list, and nearly every Friday I get a code for $1.25 off a rental. We have a Redbox that's 'on the way out' for us, so it's not an extra car ride. 50 cents for a recent movie, I've become a fan of the box. (And I find it amazing that DVD release dates are often a few months after a new release. Black Panther was still in theaters when Redbox showed it would be on DVD this week. No waiting a year till DVD)

Agree. Redbox offers great eMail deals as well as freebies with their Perks program. A great value all the way around.
Thanks, Corrie for another great money saving post!
