It's not uncommon for a pair of glasses to cost over $400. While being able to see is certainly important, you don't have to go broke buying a pair of glasses. There are so many things you can do to save big money. Let's take a closer look at how to save money on glasses.
Keep a Copy of Your Prescription
You want to ask your eye doctor for a copy of your prescription. Many eye doctors have glasses available to purchase in their office. However, these glasses are usually highly overpriced. With that said, some eye doctors will match online prices, so keep that in mind. Either way though, make sure you have a copy of your prescription.
Frankenstein Your Reading Glasses
If you need reading glasses, but need different lenses for each eye, Frankenstein your glasses together. Buy two pairs of reading glasses that are the same frames, but purchase one in the prescription you need for each eye. You can then unscrew the frames and change out one of the lenses. This will save you so much money on a pair of reading glasses.
Consider the Features You Need
There are so many features that the salesman will try to get you to buy. You want to carefully consider what you actually need in a pair of glasses. For example, if you'll be wearing the glasses all the time, you will probably want transition glasses that will go dark when you go outside. If you just need a pair of reading glasses though, you'll probably want to keep things as basic as possible (and can possibly just buy basic reading glasses rather than prescription glasses).
Shop Around
You also want to shop around for the best prices. Check all the different eyeglasses stores in your area and see how much a pair of glasses you like is going to cost. This will take some time, but could save you a lot of money.
We found out that we can save a ton of money buying our glasses at Costco. If you order them in August, there are usually coupons for kids glasses and you can save $30 off a second pair of glasses (great for kids who tend to break their glasses).
Use Coupons
Yes, you can find coupons for sunglasses. There are often coupons in the Sunday paper for local eyeglasses stores. Sometimes you'll even see buy a pair and get one free. Again though, compare prices. Just because there's a coupon doesn't mean those will be the cheapest glasses.
Buy Online
Last, but not least, shop online for your glasses. There are so many awesome stores where you will be able to save a lot of money. EyeBuyDirect.com and Zenni Optical are some of those sites. Compare the prices of online stores to local stores and see who has the best price.
You don't have to pay a lot of money for a pair of glasses. There are so many different ways to save a lot of money.
