Family photos are something you can treasure for a lifetime. They also make a great gift for grandparents. Of course, we’ve all seen the photos of family pictures that went REALLY wrong. And, we’ve all seen family photos that just weren’t any good. If you want to get a family photo done, consider these dos and don’ts before the big day.
Have a Talk Before the Photo
If you have teenagers, sit down and explain how much this photo means to not only you, but the person you will be giving it to. We all know that teenagers can sometimes be a problem for family photos. Ugly faces might be the least of your worries. The last thing you want to worry about is a hand gesture that completely ruins the photo. You also want to talk to siblings and explain that you absolutely will not put up with fighting.
Skip the Matchy Matchy Outfits
You may be tempted, but don’t do it. Matchy outfits are so overdone. Instead, choose colors that compliment each other and be sure to add some patterns to your outfits. You want a family photo that looks casual and relaxed, not forced. And don’t forget to match your shoes to your outfit.
Keep It Casual
Speaking of keeping it casual, don’t force poses. It’s much better to have a photo that feels genuine rather than staged. If you’re unsure of what to do, ask the photographer. Explain that you want a family photo that captures who you really are rather than making you look fake.
Choose Backgrounds and Settings Carefully
When choosing your background or setting, consider what your family enjoys. If your family enjoys being outdoors, get outdoor photos done. If your family isn’t the outdoorsy type, an outdoor setting is going to seem wrong. Choose something that matches your personalities.
Don’t Stress
Last, but not least, don’t stress about creating the perfect photo. Some of the best photos are those that candidly capture people. Those photos that capture a family laughing together are priceless. Perfection is overrated. Sometimes just getting everyone in the picture will be the real miracle.
Family photos are something special, but don’t stress on creating perfection. Also, don’t try to use one of those outdated poses or matchy matchy outfits. Be yourselves. You’ll treasure a photo that has good memories behind it so much more than one that led to a big family fight.
