Save Money: Buy Meat in Bulk

Save-Money-Buy-Meat-in-Bulk

To save money, I like to buy my ground beef in bulk (or stock up when there's a really good sale).  You'll want to make sure you know your rock-bottom price for ground beef using your price book.  The price of meat varies widely throughout the country, so you'll want to know what's your best price.

I usually buy my meat from Costco since I like the quality and the prices (88% lean for $3.79 per pound). They are usually packaged in about 6 pound packages, and I choose the Ground Beef Patties, which come in 12 large patties.  The patties make it easier for me to split the meat up into 1 pound packages to freeze since I can just use 2 patties per package.

I use my FoodSaver to vacuum seal my meat so it's ready to go right into the freezer without getting freezer burn. But, you don't need to have one to freeze meat. Just make sure you get as much of the air out of your Ziploc freezer bag as possible to reduce freezer burn.

If you do stock up during a sale, be sure to remove the ground beef from the store packaging and put into a Ziploc freezer bag before freezing.  The store wrap is too thin to keep out the air which causes freezer burn.

You can also cook all your meat after you buy it and then either freeze the cooked meat or add them to ingredients for freezer meals that you can just pull out of the freezer, heat up, and serve.

How do you save money on meat? Do you like to buy in bulk?
