Update: As of January 30, 2020, Playstation is shutting down Playstation Vue. You can still download paid movie and TV content from the Playstation Store. You can check out these tips on How to Cut the Cord and Still Watch Your Favorite TV Shows.
Chances are you've seen the commercials for Playstation Vue but not really paid attention. When non-gamers hear Playstation, they immediately tune out. However, this is one time when you should be paying attention because you could save some serious money. Playstation Vue could change the way you watch television and greatly reduce your costs.
What Is Playstation Vue?
Playstation Vue is a TV watching service that has packages similar to what you would find from satellite and cable companies. You access the service through a number of gadgets, not just the Playstation consoles. Currently, Vue service is available in select cities and can be watched everywhere you go through your Playstation 3 or 4, iPad, iPhone, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire Stick, or Chromecast.
The service has three packages: Access with 55 to 60+ channels, Core Slim with 70 to 75+ channels, and Elite Slim with over 100 channels. You can even control live TV by pausing, rewinding, etc. And, there's even a DVR feature so you can record your favorite shows. It's all the things you love about your satellite or cable company.
Can You Truly Ditch Your Cable or Satellite Company?
Now, here's the big question. Can you truly ditch your current company and go with Playstation Vue? That depends on the following criteria:
- Live in a city that has access - Major cities include most local network stations. If you're outside the 7 major metro areas with full access to local channels, you can still get Vue Slim packages for a lower price, but the package will only include on-demand for local network stations rather than live streaming.
- Make sure your channels are offered - Some channels still aren't offered through the service, but new channels are being added all the time.
- Make sure you have a great high-speed internet connection that doesn't have a data limit.
If you can answer yes to these questions and the service has the channels you watch you really can ditch your satellite or cable company in favor of this service.
How Much Does It Cost?
Here's one of the best parts. Packages start as low as $29.99 a month for cities with Slim packages (and $39.99 for major metro cities with local networks). The biggest package is only $44.99 a month for Slim (or $54.99 in major metro cities). There are stand-alone channels that can be purchased separately for an additional cost, such as Showtime for $10.99 a month or $8.99 for Playstation Plus members. Best of all, there are no hidden fees. All you pay in addition to the package price is the cost of tax.
Is There a Contract?
No! That's the best part of all. You aren't getting this price because you're stuck with a 2-year contract. You&'re getting this price with the option to cancel the very next month. If you're tired of paying for TV when you're not watching it, you need this service. You can pay for it as you need it.
Still aren't sure if it's right for you? Take the 7-day free trial and see if you can ditch your satellite or cable company once and for all. There are other options out there to cut the cord and still watch your favorite shows that may be less expensive, and you just need to figure out what works best for you and your family.
