Okay. It’s time. You’ve been binge watching organization videos on YouTube (or Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix) and you’re motivated to get the job done. But where do you begin? Believe it or not, in just one weekend, you can purge an area of your home. Let’s take a closer look at how to complete a weekend purge.
Give Yourself Time
First things first. Choose a weekend where you don’t have anything going on. It will be impossible to finish the task if you’re running errands or meeting with friends. Write it down in your planner so that you don’t schedule anything during that weekend. In other words, make it a priority.
Choose the Area You Want to Tackle
Now, you want to choose an area of your home to declutter. If your entire home is in need of a purge, don’t overwhelm yourself by saying you’re going to do it all in one weekend. You’re setting yourself up for failure. Instead, choose one room. It might be your living room, kitchen, or even the playroom.
Envision What You Want for the Space
What do you want to use the area for? Are you decluttering a room to create a home office? Are you clearing out space in your garage so you can actually fit your car inside? When you have a vision for the space, you’re more likely to be excited about getting the project done. Get yourself motivated.
Focus on One Section at a Time
Don’t walk into the room and just start tossing stuff. Choose a section of the room and start there. Have three boxes for toss, donate, and keep. Staying focused on one small section at a time will prevent you feeling overwhelmed.
Be Ruthless
Last, but not least, be ruthless. Instead of holding an item and thinking about it, go with your gut reaction. Pick something up and immediately choose the box the item goes into. Another tip is once you pick an item up, you must decide what you’re going to do with it. At the end of your purge, go back through your keep box and try to purge even more items.
At the end of your weekend purge, you should really take anything that needs to be donated to the thrift store. This will prevent any second guesses on whether or not you need to keep something. Once you see how easy and rewarding it can be to complete a weekend purge, you’ll want to devote more weekends to decluttering your home.
