Groceries is one of the largest expenses for many households. The problem is that Americans waste tons of food each year. In other words, we’re literally throwing money in the trash. Thankfully, there are ways to keep food fresh longer. Whether you wrap banana stems in plastic wrap or place milk in the back of the fridge, there are many hacks to keep your food fresh longer.
Wrap Banana Stems with Plastic Wrap
It may sound crazy, but tightly wrapping the stems of your bananas in plastic wrap will make them last longer. The plastic wrap keeps the gases that ripen the fruit from reaching other parts of the fruit. This means that your bananas will last longer. Rewrap the stems each time you remove a banana.
Put a Paper Towel in with Greens
Don’t you hate it when greens turn slimy? Bagged greens and salad mixes can go bad quickly once opened. Line a storage container with paper towels and then pour in your greens. You want to make sure the greens aren’t packed tightly. Add another layer of paper towels on top and cover with the lid. This method works by soaking up any extra moisture and prevents greens from becoming bruised in the fridge.
Roll Celery in Aluminum Foil
To keep celery the freshest possible, you want to wrap it in aluminum foil. The aluminum foil lets gases out but holds moisture in. Wrap your celery tight enough to hold in moisture, but not so tight that you damage the celery stalks.
Wash Berries in a Water and Vinegar Solution
Spores can cause berries to go bad quickly. One way to prevent this is to wash your berries in a water bath of 1-part vinegar to 8-parts water before storing. Rinse the berries and dry thoroughly. Wash the container the berries came in and line with paper towels. Put your berries back into the container and store in the fridge.
Keep Potatoes from Sprouting by Adding an Apple to the Bag
This hack is super simple. Simply add an apple to your bag of potatoes to prevent your potatoes from sprouting.
Place Milk In the Back of the Fridge
Last, but not least, many new refrigerators have spots in the door for your gallon of milk. The only problem is that you want your milk to be in the coldest part of the fridge, which is usually the back of the refrigerator. If your milk is going bad faster than the expiration date suggests, it’s probably due to being stored at the wrong temperature.
If you’re tired of throwing out food, try these hacks. You’ll be amazed at how much longer your food can last. Are there any hacks that you use to keep your food fresh longer?
