Do you often find yourself not really caring whether Thanksgiving comes or goes? Is it just another day to eat more than you should and spend time with family you’d rather avoid? Let’s focus on the positive. Let’s learn to be more thankful at Thanksgiving.
Focus on Your Haves Rather Than the Have Nots
Do you often think about all the things you wish you had? Do you hate your outdated car or bathroom? Instead of focusing on all these things, think about all you have. Chances are you have things you love and mean a lot to you and you’re very lucky to have them. In may even be something you often take for granted – such as food. Remember these things whenever you don't feel thankful and you'll start to increase your contentment with what you already have.
Count Your Blessings
Look around you. Do you have kids? Do you have a spouse? How is your health? Do you have a job that pays your bills? Then you, my friend, have many, many blessings. Sometimes it’s hard to see these things because we become too focused on the bad things in our lives. End each day by leaving the bad things behind. Start each day fresh by counting your blessings.
Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen
If you need to be reminded of how lucky you are, volunteer at a soup kitchen. You’ll see what unlucky REALLY looks like. You’ll see men who fought for our country, homeless and hungry. You’ll see children who spend their nights on the streets. By helping others, you’ll become more thankful at Thanksgiving.
Be More Positive
Each morning wake up with the resolution to be positive. Stop saying I can’t or I don’t. For example, instead of saying, “I can’t afford a kitchen remodel.” Say, “I can paint my kitchen and make little changes to improve it.” Always look for another solution.
Start a Thankful Chain
Last, but not least, start a thankful chain with your family. Write down something you’re thankful for each day on a strip of paper and loop it around a strip of paper that your child or husband wrote on. Continue doing this until Thanksgiving Day when you sit down and read everything you’re all thankful for as a reminder of your blessings.
We all go through times when we don’t feel thankful for anything. It’s usually when things are rough and we’ve forgotten all that we have. Don’t let the negative things outweigh all the positive. Chances are you have many things to be thankful for at Thanksgiving.
