If your cell phone has seen better days, chances are you've already been scoping out prices. There are so many expensive phones out there that you might choose stick with your old phone until it dies. You don't have to though. There are a number of ways to save money on a new cell phone (and cell phone service). Whether you check the offerings available through prepaid companies or sign a contract, you can save money.
Check the Offerings From Prepaid Phone Companies
Did you know that you can save some serious money by switching to a prepaid provider? Straight Talk, for example, offers unlimited calls, text, and data for $45 a month. Many of the big cell phone providers with contracts limit the amount of data you can use. Not only can you save on the cost of your bill, but you can find some great phones for less than fifty-dollars.
I was able to get a brand-new iPhone 5S last year for only $99. Yes, it's a couple of years old, but I'd much rather have an outdated phone than a $600 bill for a new one.
Buy Refurbished
Another great way to save money is to buy a refurbished phone through a company like Gazelle. People are often scared of refurbished products, but don't be. These are phones that have had any issues fixed. This means that the phone you get is going to be in working order. Best of all, many come with a warranty.
Shop for a Used Phone
You can also shop for used phones through companies like eBay. The key is to make sure the phone can be used with your network. Many phones are programmed to only be used with Verizon or Straight Talk, etc. When buying a used phone, look for unlocked phones that can be used with any provider.
Look for Special Sales
There are usually awesome sales to be found on cell phones. You might find prepaid phones on sale at Walmart or you may find a great deal with your current provider. Some companies often have a buy one get one sale, which is great if you need a new phone for you and your spouse.
Walmart offered a great deal on a brand-new iPhone 5S last year on Black Friday - only $99 vs. $149 through Straight Talk.
Sign a Contract
Last, but not least, while many companies have pulled away from contracts, there are still companies that do offer them. If you know you're going to be with a company for a long time, a contract can score you an awesome phone for very little, if not free.
You don't have to spend $500 on a phone that will be outdated in a few months. Whether you look for sales or buy used, you can save money on a new cell phone.
