This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens. All opinions are 100% mine.

If your prescription insurance plan is managed by Express Scripts, you may have recently noticed that you can no longer fill your prescriptions at Walgreens.

Basically, Walgreens has been negotiating a contract renewal with Express Scripts over the past year. The negotiations were unsuccessful, which meant that the contract expired on 12/31/11. Therefore, Walgreens is no longer part of Express Scripts’ pharmacy provider network as of Jan. 1, 2012. This includes all Walgreens pharmacies nationwide and Duane Reade pharmacies in the New York City area.

Unfortunately, the issues between Walgreens and Express Scripts do not mean that costs are going down, but that members may have to leave their long-time pharmacy and possibly drive farther to pick up their prescriptions. Plus, it affects our nation’s military, since Tricare is one of Express Scripts’ clients (even though Walgreens offered to negotiate the Tricare contract separately).

What does this mean if you are an Express Scripts customer and use Walgreens pharmacy?

Be sure to check your prescription insurance card. If it states Express Scripts, check with your local Walgreens pharmacist to find out for sure if you are impacted.

If you are impacted by the change, Walgreens is trying to make the transition as smooth as possible for you. During the month of January, get a special discount on the annual membership for the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens. An individual can join for only $5 or $10 for a family membership, and receive savings on more than 8,000 brand name and all generic medications. More than 400 generics are available with a three-month supply for less than $1 a week. Regular annual membership is $20 for an individual and $35 for a family.

If you are an Express Scripts member, and you’re upset about not being able to use Walgreens as your pharmacy, think about contacting your local media to voice your dissatisfaction. You can also stay updated by following Walgreens on Facebook and Walgreens on Twitter
