My husband and I just drove halfway across the country. It was two and a half days of intense driving, but we had a lot of fun – just because we were together.

My Review:

I love how TurboTax walks you through your return step-by-step to simplify the tax process.  Plus, since they do the calculations for you, there’s no higher math involved, lessening the chance for calculation errors that I might have if I had to do them myself with pen and paper.

Laundry Problem Solved!

I love moisture wicking technology for my workout items, but I hate how to I have to sort those items separately in the laundry to ensure that I don’t use fabric softener on them. Then, I have to pull them out to air dry so I can use a dryer sheet on the rest of the load.

Saturday nights are movie nights in our family. We’re always looking for movies the entire family can watch, so I was excited for a chance to review the movie, A Mile in His Shoes, which was released on DVD on last week (after initially playing on GMC in September).

About the Movie:

Only a miracle can help baseball coach Arthur ‘Murph’ Murphy (Dean Cain) and his losing minor league baseball team. As Murph sets out to recruit new talent for the team, he stumbles upon Mickey (Luke Schroder), a young farmer with an incredible pitcher’s arm. However, Mickey’s parents are reluctant in allowing him to join the team because he has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. Murph convinces Mickey’s parents that life in the minor league will benefit their unique son, but he doesn’t realize just how much his new recruit will help the team s game and, more importantly, their spirit. Based on a true story, Thomas Kinkade Presents: A Mile in His Shoes is an inspirational film that celebrates faith, determination and the power of friendship.

My Review:

I remember watching Dean Cain in Lois & Clark, and I have to admit that Dean Cain was a small part of why I watched the show .  So, it was fun to see a little bit older version of Dean Cain playing the baseball coach in this movie.  My husband and I both enjoyed the movie – the story was inspirational and I thought that Luke Schroder did a good job of playing the autistic boy.  All in all, it was a fun movie worth watching.

I grew up watching The Muppet Show on Saturday nights, and I remember watching The Great Muppet Caper in the theater. So, I was excited when the Muppets hits the theaters again this year with the new Muppet movie.

I’ll admit it; I love to read personal finance books. I think it’s because I like to see what I’m doing right, and I like to get ideas for things that I can do better (because there’s always something!).

I recently had the pleasure of reading Crystal Paine’s new book, The Money Saving Mom’s Budget: Slash Your Spending, Pay Down Your Debt, Streamline Your Life, and Save Thousands a Year, which releases today (1/10), and I’m really excited about the book.  If you’ve ever read Crystal’s blog (Money Saving Mom), she has a nice simple writing style that can make even complex topics easy to understand.  Her book is exactly like that too and includes pages of worksheets to get you started (or more efficient) on your saving journey.

Even if you’re already an avid couponer, this book is still for you, as Crystal walks you through setting goals and choosing bite-size pieces to make the goal not seem so daunting.  She also helps with the daunting task of creating a budget and gives some ideas on how to save money, aside from couponing.

Right before Thanksgiving, I caught a cold from my son…that lasted for over 2 weeks. I later figured out that I must have also caught a second cold that my dad brought with him from my nephew. But, regardless, it was a pretty rough 3 weeks with trying to manage Thanksgiving, blogging, and getting my Christmas preparations made.

It’s hard for me to slow down, but being sick pretty much forces me to take it easy.  I love to snuggle in bed under my heated blanket when I’m sick.  My cat also seems to love the heat, so she usually joins me for a nap.

My Review:

Although I enjoy snuggling together on the coach with my son searching for items together, I never really thought about all the work required to create a books like this – until I watched the behind-the-scenes look at the book where the author, Walter Wick, takes us through the creation of the book.  There is so much thought that goes into each scene in the book – it’s amazing!

I thought it is fun how each page of the book shows the progression of a story, from the creation of the train, to a child receiving it as a gift at a birthday party, to it being sold at a yard sale and played with again by another child.  The hidden items are not obvious, so it takes some work to find each item on the page.  Personally, as long as you can eventually find the items, I think it’s fun to make the search a challenge.  Plus then I usually can’t remember where the items are, and we have the fun of searching for them a second (and third, etc.) time.

Overall, I think the detail on this book is amazing, and it’s a fun opportunity to spend time with my son.  It’s a great gift idea for a child that enjoys picture search books.

Review:

We visited Burger King last night, and my kids really enjoyed the new kids meal.  My 5-year old immediately put on his crown and wore it throughout the meal, and my 8-year old enjoyed reading the games and info on the box.

One of the questions on the box asked if you had super powers, which one would you like to have?  We each thought about it, and discussed it over dinner.  It was fun to have a little discussion all based on a kids meal!  Plus, once we got home, my son wanted to logon to make his donation to Wildlife.

When our troops are called to serve, their families must rise to meet the challenges of service as well. To thank them, Cheerios® and the USO partnered in a postcard campaign that spreads Cheer directly to these military families and supports USO programs.

Here´s how it works:

• Check your pantry for specially-marked boxes of Cheerios that feature Cheer postcards on the front of the box (and you may be able to find some boxes in-store).
• Cut out the postcard from the Cheerios logo, write a message of thanks on the back, add a stamp and mail the pre-addressed card to the USO by November 30, 2012.

My Thoughts

Growing up, my mom made my sister and I some really cute stockings using a felt-kit with our names embroidered on them. I still use my stocking to this day, and I love how it’s personalized for me.

Now, I want to recreate the same look for my family, but I can admit that I’m not that great of a seamstress to create my own.  That’s why the Christmas stockings at Personal Creations are a great solution.

Have you ever wondered when your packages would be delivered and hoped that you’d be home to pull it off your porch? I have…I remember receiving a vacuum while we were gone on a weekend trip and hoping it would still be sitting there when we got home.

UPS recently introduced a new customizable delivery service for residential receivers called UPS My Choice.

Basically, you register for the program (a basic membership is FREE) and you can receive alerts via e-mail, text, or voice notification about shipments the day before a shipment arrives, the morning of, and/or delivery confirmation.

Next up, an interesting take on classic flatware. We’ve all heard of a spork, but what about a…knork?

Mike Miller first thought of the idea while eating pizza with a group of friends. Trying to eat pizza with a normal fork, he realized what a struggle it was and how uncomfortable it felt. The challenge of neatly slicing pizza in a manner capable of impressing girls was what led Mike to conceptualize the Knork. Once he saw an employee cutting pizzas in the back with a pizza cutter and taking pictures of people of all ages using a regular fork, Mike combined all this into one utensil that was suitable for all ages and right or left handed users. The idea then sat for four years until graduating from high school.

After attending a few years at Kansas State University with a medical degree in mind, the idea for the Knork still remained. Being 20 years old at the time, he decided to return home to Wichita and take business classes at Wichita State University. Mike’s first step was establishing parent company Phantom Enterprises in October 2000. He then pursued a patent by researching and developing a prototype. Using one of his mother’s forks as a base, he used Bondo, a car modeling compound, to create a model. Today, the Knork is properly patented, produced and marketed and is on the ‘cutting edge’!

I have a real weakness for Christmas music. In fact, I currently have 528 songs in my Christmas playlist on my iPod. I love to listen to Christmas music, and I’m not sick of it by the time Christmas rolls around…instead I reluctantly move the songs off my iPod (since there’s not enough room for Christmas songs in addition to everything else).

So, I was excited to review the new FFH album, One Silent Night. Not only does it include traditional Christmas songs, but it also has some original Christmas praise songs.  I have many favorites, including:

My Review:

PBS Kids is my favorite TV channel for my kids.  The shows all have educational elements in them, and I like that there are very limited commercials.  My boys both enjoyed watching Caillou, and I love the two Caillou products – especially the Caillou Fireman’s House.

My Review:

My Review:

It was easy to hook the V.Reader to my computer and download the Learning Lodge Navigator software to get it set up.  Plus, you can download 3 FREE books onto the reader (you do need to have an SD memory card to download ebooks).

My boys enjoyed playing around with the preloaded book and coloring in the coloring book.  We also ended up purchasing the Scooby Doo V.Reader cartridge, and my 5 year old enjoyed not only listening to the book, but playing the reader games, such as identifying the ending sounds in a word.  I love how it ties in with what he’s learning in kindergarten.

During winters in Michigan my skin tends to get VERY dry from the furnace being on almost non-stop.  If I don’t use lotion on my hands daily, they start to crack and bleed – not very fun!

So, I was excited to try the new Gold Bond Sheer Ribbons Body Lotion.  There are two different formulas available: Pearl Radiance (for visibly radiant skin) and Natural Silk (for touchably soft skin).

Although I like the scent of both lotions, my favorite is the Natural Silk, since I like the subtle flowery scent (mimosa petals, tuscan cyprus, and apricot reduction) a bit more.  But, I certainly like the other scent (citrus-nectarine, rosewood, and Asian teas) also.  It was tough to choose!

As a mom, I think it is so important to teach our kids about money. I thought that my parents did a great job of teaching me, and I really want to pass on positive financial habits to my children too. So, I was happy to review the new book, Three Cups, which releases in stores on 11/8.

My Review:

My kids and I really enjoyed this book. Although using the method of splitting your money into save, spend, and give is not a new concept, I liked how the book equated each cup with adventure and then showed some of the end results of using the cups. Plus, I also enjoyed the retro feel of the illustrations.

There are many things that I love about Christmas, but two of my favorites are listening to Christmas music and watching Christmas movies. So, of course I was excited to review the new movie, Christmas Lodge.

About the Movie:

Thomas Kinkade presents Christmas Lodge: a place where a heart-warming past and loving future meet for one remarkable group of people.

During a weekend trip to the mountains, Mary (Erin Karpluk) finds herself at the now- dilapidated lodge where she spent the holidays with her family growing up. She becomes determined to restore the building to its former glory. Inspired by her grandfather and guided by her grandmother in heaven, Mary throws herself into the project, and during the process finds herself drawn to Jack (Michael Shanks), a handsome man who loves the lodge as much as she does.

Historically unlucky in love, this chance encounter allows Mary to renew her faith in life and discover her one true love. The Christmas Lodge is an uplifting story about the importance of faith, family and the true holiday spirit.

Review:

My husband and I both enjoyed the movie. It was fun to watch, and we enjoyed the themes of faith and family interwoven throughout the movie. I thought that the story was good (if not a bit predictable) as well as the acting.  But, I suppose I would be disappointed if it weren’t predictable .

There a new racing video game in town – Ben 10 Galactic Racing was released on Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and DS last week (10/18).

Ben 10 Galactic Racing is the first multi-player racing game in the Ben 10 series on Cartoon Network.  It features 25 tracks that change routes mid-race and is spread across 5 planets from the Ben10 universe.  You can choose to play as either Ben, Kevin, or one of 13 fan-favorite aliens and they can race in more than 30 unique karts.  Every character has a special ability they can use on the race track, and Ben can transform into different aliens mid-race.

Review:

My boys loved this game.  They have played other racing games, but they really enjoyed the aliens and racing through space in this game.  Although they have heard of Ben 10 before, they’ve never seen the show on TV, but they still thought the characters were really fun (what boy doesn’t like aliens?).  They especially liked how Ben changed into different aliens with power-ups.
