Since we had kids almost nine years ago, my husband and I have made Saturday nights unofficially “Family Movie Night”.
Initially, I stocked up on some of my favorite old live-action Disney movies that I grew up with like Parent Trap, Snowball Express, and many more. And eventually, the kids tastes won out and we added movies like Cars, Kung Fu Panda, etc. to our collection.
Although I’m not a huge fan of my kids watching too much television, I soon noticed that as soon as the movie ended, my oldest son’s imagination kicked in, and he spent hours reenacting scenes from the movies.
If we happened to watch Snowball Express, he would build a snowmobile out of couch cushions and ride on it. Or if we watched The Apple Dumpling Gang, he would turn into a cowboy, complete with cowboy hat.

Recently, we had the chance to rent the Dino Dan: Dino Trackers / Ready? Set? Dino! DVD from Redbox. Since we don’t have cable, my boys had never seen the series on Nick Jr., and they thought it was great.
The series is about a boy named Dan who imagines dinosaurs all around him. As he observes them, he uses the scientific method to gather clues and solve mysteries.
I thought it had a nice mix of learning activities such as learning more about dinosaurs and how to use reasoning to solve problems as well as some funny interactions between Dan, his friends, teachers, and mom.
My boys have had fun solving mysteries around the house after watching the series!
