I grew up eating homemade spaghetti sauce, so I don’t think that the jarred stuff tastes good (no matter how much my MIL tries to doctor it up with meat). However, I do have to admit that the jarred stuff is very easy to make. I don’t always have an hour to cook the days that we want to eat spaghetti.
- 6 oz. tomato paste
- 28 oz. crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 onion
- 1/2 green pepper
- 1/2 lb. ground beef or turkey
- 1/2 tsp. black pepper
- 1 tsp. oregano
- 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper (try a smaller amount the 1st time to make sure it’s not too spicy for you and your kids)
Chop onion and green pepper. Put in pan with hamburger and sautee. Drain fat. Add tomatoes, paste and spices. Simmer for half an hour.

I’m going to try it!
This looks very good
I grew up eating my mom’s canned spaghetti sauce, so of course I canned it, too. Then I made it fresh once or twice, and it is SO much better and fresher tasting that way! This year I just canned plain tomato sauce, and will add the other stuff when I go to make the spaghetti or lasagna sauce
This one made my mouth water!
I have been trying to lose weight and I have found that I love crushed tomatoes with italian seasonings with green peppers, onions and mushrooms sauteed into it. Simple, low fat and yummy!
I am so hungry after looking at all these pasta recipes. Yours looks great! I do the same thing you do – make a lot and freeze it.
I’ve been looking for a homemade recipe — we’ll have to try it. Sounds really easy too.
